XP allowed a repair install even if you could not boot to XP. That changed with Vista and later. No, it would not be possible to create a disk image and then restore it to a Windows computer with all settings intact. The restored image would overwrite your new install and you would be back to square one. I dunno if I should be running that command from a specific place, but when I run from Sources or C: it says "The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The requested system device cannot be found. I feel like there's still a chance something in the BIOS is wrong even though I've triple checked everything google said could cause this.
I would think that there was a physical failure, except I can view the entire harddrive using Ubuntu and everything is readable. I don't believe the bios has anything to do with your problem.
I also do not believe you have a physical failure for the exact reason you posted, Ubuntu can read the drive. Somehow the BCD store has been completely corrupted and possibly some of your. What happens if you use bcdedit at the E: prompt? If that gives info then I am really confused. I never heard of VirtualBox breaking an OS.

I don't think it's malware related. At this point, if you want to do a virus scan it would be with the drive attached to another computer or by using a boot disk like Kaspersky Rescue. Posted 01 January - AM. When computer boots into WinRE environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. I ran the scannow command and it said Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. I still don't understand what "Windows installed partition" means. Is it the partition with all of the programs and files, system32, etc. Windows install partition contains Windows, Program and Files, System32 folders. I'm only clarifying since I've run commands before troubleshooting and they've really screwed up things. Partition selection seems to be rather important.

The system restore seemed to work perfectly, I restarted the pc one or two times after I did it.

Have you restore your computer to a date when it was working using System Restore tool. Mark C: partition active by following below instructions: 1. Open Command Prompt.
Type Diskpart and press Enter key. Type List disk and press Enter key. Take note of the Windows installed disk number. Type Select Disk 0 and press Enter key. Replace number zero with Windows installed disk number. Type list partition and press Enter key. Take a note of the C: partition assigned number. Replace partition number 1 with the C: partition number. Type Active and press Enter key. Restart your computer to see Windows will boot normally.
